VIU’s Building Resilience in Coastal Communities (BRiCC) program will be offering 24 internship and scholarship positions for VIU students and 7 scholarships incoming Belizean graduate students from 2016 to 2018. BRiCC QE II Scholars will undertake research, project work and internships in collaboration with community partners in Belize and on Vancouver Island that aim to support:
- Develop global citizens through enriched academic, professional and cross-cultural experiences.
- Capacity to foster sustainable economic activity, particularly tourism.
- Management of water in coastal zones, including drinking water.
- Developing and managing parks and protected areas in or near coastal communities.
- Coastal communities’ responses to climate change.
- Sustainable aquatic foods and local agricultural production.
Funded by the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships, the program aims to:
- Develop global citizens through enriched academic, professional and cross-cultural experiences.
- Activate a new generation of enterprising leaders in Canada and around the Commonwealth through facilitating lasting local and global community engagement.
- Enhance collaborative capacity and deepen peer relationships among interns and scholars to enrich the program experience and facilitate personal and professional growth.
- Enable Scholars to pursue and amplify community development in Canada and the Commonwealth
